The Complete Golf Launch Monitor Buying Guide

Most buying guides rank monitors by brand reputation. We rank by data. Here's the framework we built the whole site around: four questions, in order of how much each one narrows the field.

1. What sim software do you want to play?

This is the single biggest gate. Not every monitor connects to every simulator, and some connections need an extra paid tier on top of the monitor's own price — GSPro in particular has real gotchas: Bushnell Launch Pro needs its Gold tier, Rapsodo needs Premium, Uneekor needs its Pro Package, and SkyTrak isn't on GSPro's official supported list at all. Check compatibility before anything else: GSPro, E6 Connect, Awesome Golf, FSX.

2. What will it cost you — not just the sticker price?

Across our database, 51% of monitors require a paid subscription for full course play, so the hardware price is only part of the real cost. Every monitor page breaks the cost down into hardware plus what you'll pay per year in required membership and sim software, and every card shows the honest first-year number. If a required subscription's price isn't published yet, we show "from $X+" rather than guess — check price vs. 5-year true cost to see which units diverge most from their sticker price.

Also worth knowing: some units carry a one-time optional "unlock" (like FlightScope's Pro Package) for advanced data. That's reported separately and never baked into the true-cost total, because it's a discretionary upgrade, not something you need to own the monitor.

3. Indoor, outdoor, or both?

24 of 35 monitors in our database handle both indoor and outdoor use; the rest are indoor-only overhead/photometric rigs built for a permanent sim bay. If you want real range data in the summer and simulator golf in the winter from one device, filter to portable & outdoor picks. 4. How will you use it?

Some monitors only produce practice numbers (ball speed, carry, spin) with no course play at all. If you want to play real rounds against a course, confirm the unit's simCapability isn't "none" before buying; several sub-$300 units are practice-only and won't connect to any simulator software no matter what you pair them with.

Room requirements — the mistake behind most returns

Most launch monitor returns happen because the unit doesn't fit the room. Ceiling height, depth behind the ball, and depth in front of it to the screen are all real, separate constraints — a monitor spec sheet quoting one "minimum room size" number is hiding which dimension bites first. Behind-the-ball radar units need the most depth (14.8 ft average) because of ball-flight requirements; side-mounted cameras need the least (11.8 ft average). Check your exact numbers, not averages — every monitor page lists all three minimums for that unit before you buy.

Buying households with both left- and right-handed golfers?

Placement determines how painful this is. Overhead units are seamless — no repositioning between golfers. Side-mounted cameras usually need the unit physically moved (60–90 seconds), though a few offer a software toggle instead. Behind-the-ball radar units work from the same spot for both, but need roughly 12 ft of width to do it comfortably. This is on every monitor's detail page under "Right + left-handed."
