Radar vs. Photometric Launch Monitors: Which Tracking Tech Should You Buy?
Every launch monitor in our 35-unit database uses one of two core technologies — Doppler radar or high-speed camera (photometric) — or a hybrid of both. The tech determines your room requirements, your indoor accuracy, and often your price, more than any other spec.
What each technology measures
Doppler radar units sit behind you and track the ball's flight through the air using reflected radio waves — the same principle as a police speed gun. They measure ball speed, launch angle, and spin directly from the ball's trajectory, which means they need real airborne flight distance to get a clean read. That's the "radar tax": in our data, behind-the-ball units average 14.8 ft of room depth versus 11.8 ft for side-mounted cameras.
Photometric (camera-based) units use one or more high-speed cameras — often paired with infrared — to photograph the ball and clubhead at the moment of impact. They don't need flight distance, which is why overhead and side-mounted camera units cluster at lower room depths regardless of price (see the price-vs-depth chart). The tradeoff: several photometric units need reflective stickers or marked balls to read spin accurately indoors — 8 of the 35 monitors in our database require them.
A handful of monitors — Rapsodo MLM2PRO, SkyTrak+/ST MAX, FlightScope's X-series — fuse both: radar for ball flight, camera for club data and impact. These "hybrid" units tend to sit in the budget-to-mid tier and are a reasonable way to get club data without paying for a full photometric rig.
Indoor spin accuracy — the honest caveat
Radar's biggest technical weak spot is indoor spin. Outdoors, a radar unit tracks a real ball flight over dozens of yards and gets a precise spin reading. Indoors, hitting into a net or screen a few feet away, radar units estimate spin from limited flight data — most of our budget radar entries flag spin as calculated or estimated rather than measured (see each monitor's spec table for the measured-vs-calculated breakdown). Photometric units generally measure spin directly off the ball's dimple pattern at impact, which is why serious indoor practice setups skew camera-based despite the higher price and stricter marked-ball requirements.
Price reality by technology
Radar and hybrid units dominate the budget-to-mid tier; pure photometric skews expensive. Among our verified entries, the cheapest of each category:
